How to delete or hide apps on iPhone

It’s possible to remove some preinstalled iOS apps from your iPad or iPhone, but not all of them, here’s a way to make Apple apps that can’t be deleted vanish. Plus we show you how to hide apps you don’t want others to see on your iPhone

In iOS 10 Apple made it possible to remove unwanted preinstalled iOS apps from your iPad or iPhone. However, there are still some Apple apps that can’t be deleted. We show you how to rid your iPhone of these apps. We also show you how to hide apps you don’t want others to see on your iPhone.

How to delete iPhone apps

If you are short of space on your iPhone or iPad one of the quickest ways to increase the storage available to you is to delete apps. This is actually very easy to do in most cases.

To delete any app you have purchased from the App Store, or any shortcuts you have added to your Home screen all you need to do is follow these steps:

  1. Find the icon for the app you want to delete
  2. Tap and hold the icon until it starts to jump around
  3. Tap on the X that appears in the right corner
  4. Choose Delete

How to delete apps you can’t find on the home screen

If you have a ton of apps spread over pages of screens you may not relish the idea of selecting each in the above way. Luckily there’s a quicker way to delete apps if you have a few that you want to dispose of or if you can’t locate the app on your iPhone home screen.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage
  2. In the Storage section choose Manage Storage
  3. All your apps are listed here according to how much space they take up, locate the one you want to delete
  4. Choose Delete App

How to delete Apple apps

There are a number of apps that Apple pre-installs on the iPhone. Some of these are essentials, like Messages, the Clock, Calendar, and the Camera. However, there are also apps that people are less keen on using, and it can be frustrating if they take up room on your home screens, making it more difficult to find the apps you use daily.

Anther reason you might wish to delete some of these apps is off you are really short of space on your iPhone. While Apple apps tend not to use up a lot of space, if you had to choose between deleting an app you use and one you don’t use it could be very frustrating to find that the app you never use can’t be deleted.

Since Apple updated the iPhone and iPad operating system to iOS 10 it’s been possible to delete some (but not all) Apple apps. According to Apple these are the Apple-made apps that can be deleted:

  • Calculator
  • Calendar
  • Compass
  • Contacts
  • FaceTime
  • Find My Friends
  • Home
  • iBooks
  • iCloud Drive
  • iTunes Store
  • Mail
  • Maps
  • Music
  • News
  • Notes
  • Podcasts
  • Reminders
  • Stocks
  • Tips
  • Videos
  • Voice Memos
  • Watch
  • Weather

Here’s how to delete Apple apps such as Stocks, Voice Memos, Compass, Maps, Videos and Tips.  It’s basically the same as above, in that you can press and hold the icon until it jumps about and then tap the X. However, not all Apple apps can be deleted, as you will see in the next section.

  1. Find the icon for the app you want to delete
  2. Tap and hold the icon until it starts to jump around
  3. Tap on the X that appears in the right corner
  4. Choose Remove or Delete

You’ll notice that some apps can be deleted and others can only be removed. It turns out that Apple isn’t really letting you delete the app in its entirety, although you should gain back some storage space as associated data will be lost. You’ll still need to go back to the App Store in order to redownload the app if you change your mind.

How to ‘delete’ Apple apps that can’t be deleted

While its great news that Apple has finally allowed deleting of it’s own preinstalled apps, only a select few can be removed in this fashion. There are, unfortunately, still some Apple apps that cannot be deleted because they don’t gain an X when you press and hold them. These include:
